Grimbold Books is delighted to share with you our NEW imprints. Do you write short stories, novelettes or novellas in the science fiction, fantasy or dark literary fiction genres? If so, then please read on.
Over the past few months we’ve been working hard, and the end result is here:
When deciding what would qualify as a ‘short story’ or ‘novella’ we decided to use the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America criteria (used for the Nebula Awards) and here’s a description from their page:
- Flash fiction: Up to 1000 words;
- Short Story: less than 7,500 words;
- Novelette: at least 7,500 words but less than 20,000 words;
- Novella: at least 17,500 words but less than 50,000 words
- Novel: 50,000 words or more
If you’re not sure if your work would suit our publishing house, then please do read our submission guidelines carefully. Here’s a couple of links that should give you a taste of what we like:
Grimbold Books is committed to publishing high quality work, and all Inkling, Grimkin and Nyxies titles will be available in both electronic and paperback formats.
With flash fiction and short stories, depending on the subject matter, we will look to publish these as sole author collections, or as part of a larger anthology. Novelettes and novellas will be assessed on a submission by submission basis.
Huh? Why shorter fiction?
Let’s clear this up. We’re not asking you to write something specifically for us. This isn’t a call for subs for a themed anthology, but perhaps you have a novella or a series of novelettes looking for a home. Maybe we are that home.
You mention flash fiction?
Yes. We’ve started running competitions and the entries have been of exceptionally high quality. Our first Kristell Inkling will be a collection of entries from our feline competition. We’re not expecting people to give away their work for free (quite the opposite) and so those contributors are receiving royalties and contributor copies. We anticipate publishing collections such as these in the future (especially for charity) and so we wanted a dedicated imprint for this type of fiction. We want people to know that Kristell Inklings are short, sharp and snappy fiction pieces.
I’m confused. What about royalties? What’s the payment?
Royalties will be discussed with the author individually, but in the interests of transparency we offer 50% on ebooks and 10% RRP on paperback, which we feel is competitive in today’s market. We don’t offer payment per word, but, of course, everything is negotiable…
We’re always happy to answer questions.
Submissions are open, and we look forward to reading your stories very soon!
